Diving Deeper Into Nevan J.’s Album Sincerely J.

Sincerely J. gives off an R&B and pop feeling from the instrumentals to the vocalization. It’s raw but it definitely has potential and is worth giving a spin. Remember, these are my OPINIONS. I encourage all readers to check it out for themselves and form their own thoughts. Let’s get started.

Lyricism- 68

Nevan J. doesn’t really show much lyrical ability on this project. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because it’s R&B, not rap but there aren’t really any lines that are memorable.

Storytelling- 72

The album doesn’t have enough storytelling for an R&B project in my opinion. It has it here and there, but again, nothing really memorable. None of the songs paint a picture. When listening to this style of music, I want to understand where the artist is mentally or emotionally. Set the tone so it’s easier to connect.

Flow- 80

I can’t complain about the flow. It’s smooth and easy to listen to. My only critique is that Sincerely J. begins to sound like a long song after a while with similar tones and rhythms. This could’ve been eliminated if the 17 song album was split into multiple 4-6 song EPs.

Versatility- 70

For a project with almost 20 songs, I would’ve liked seeing more switch ups. The slow, sensual vibe on “Lady & the Tramp” and the upbeat instrumental on “UZI FLOW/NEPTUNE” were nice touches. There were definitely some songs that could’ve been cut overall just to help this one not sound so similar throughout.

Production- 76

The production isn’t bad by any means. I do think the beats fit Nevan’s style, but they also contribute to some of the repetitiveness. The mixing is a bit raw here and there but it still sounds good enough to listen to. I will say– this album definitely passed the car test and is a joy to ride to.

Creativity- 82

It’s always hard to rate the creativity and even harder to explain the rating, especially when you’re not in an artist's presence while they’re in their creation process. I’m a fan of skits, interludes and other small efforts that make a project complete so bravo to Nevan J. on that. The main thing holding the creativity down for me on this is it still sounds like Nevan is finding himself. I’m hearing a lot of Don Toliver and Lil Uzi Vert influence. This is by no means a bad thing, but the more he finds himself, the stronger his music will become.

Hit Potential- 77

There’s without a doubt a few tracks that I can see hitting the radio on this album. I’ve said this word a lot in this review but it’s just raw. With a few touches and some game from music industry professionals, I genuinely see Nevan J. taking his craft to another level.

Vibe- 88

Like I said, several of these songs are perfect for a quick commute. It’s easy to listen to with a refreshing vibe.

Features- 65

To be completely honest, the features were probably my least favorite part of the project. HeartBreakNoir did okay; his flow was nice. Appollonia was good but the mix is so drastic compared to Nevan’s parts that it’s hard to listen to. Luvvshai can do much better than his verse on “UP!”

Cover Art- 80

Pink vibes for love songs.

Tracklist- 63

The track list is graded by taking the songs, excluding intros & outros (unless they are songs) & skits and assigning points– 1 point for songs I enjoyed, .5 for songs that are decent, and 0 for songs I didn’t like too much– then totaling up the points and dividing by the total number of songs. For Sincerely J. I scored it 9.5/15 with 6 songs earning 1 point, 7 songs earning .5 points and 2 songs earning 0 points.

Overall: 74
