Lawton High Heading To State For First Time Since 2009

Lawton High School men’s basketball defeated Carl Albert 58-54 last night in the 5A Area 1 Championship and are advancing to the State tournament for the first time since 2009.
The Wolverines have put on a show all season, losing only three games with a total point differential of 14. Needless to say they easily could’ve knocked out an undefeated regular season, but losing in the regular season is needed to sharpen the blade for when it really matters: Playoffs.
Although they started slow against Carl Albert, LHS came out strong in the second half. They went up by as much as 17 with only 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter, but CA kept their head in the game and knocked down some huge shots, eventually cutting the lead down but it was all too late. Lawton High held on in a tight one.

The Wolverines are athletic and can run with any of their opponents. The senior duo of Tavaris Deans (1,200+ career points) and Pene Vaisagote (1,000+ career points) have led the way, receiving a lot of recognition, but LHS has several x-factors who make the team a legit threat to any team they face at state.
Champ Brewer
Champ Brewer is a high level deep range threat who you can count on when the team is in need of a big bucket. He’s ready to step in and do work on the defensive end as well.
Nakell Adams & Braeden Burrell
Nakell Adams and Braeden Burrell will be crucial in helping Lawton stay strong down low. Carl Albert’s Lebron Royal was able to do damage on the interior in the Area championship matchup. For LHS to be successful at the state tourney, Adams and Burrell will have to make their presence felt in the paint
De’Auvyahn Young
De’Auvyahn Young is a scrappy guard who has had multiple games with 2+ steals including three with 5+ steals. In the state tourney, defense is everything. If Young finds a way to disrupt the opponent consistently, he’ll be a huge asset off the bench for the Wolverines.
State games begin on Monday, March 10th.
