Sauce Walka Compares Music to Owning an Apartment Complex
Sauce Walka shared an interesting perspective on how he views his music catalog during a sit down with Rap Radar Podcast.
“I started looking at my albums like a neighborhood.. or an apartment complex,” said the Houston rapper. “Each album is an apartment complex, each song is a unit,” he continues.
Over the past few years, there has been an increase of artists’ catalogs, or parts of it, being bought for massive lump sums of money. Justin Bieber, John Legend, and Justin Timberlake are a few who more recently have made one of these deals.
As for Sauce Walka, he’s not yet on the level of the before-mentioned names, or even close, but viewing his music in the manner described has given the Sauce Ghetto Gospel artist all the reason he needs to stay independent and avoid selling his catalog.
My Take:
If you’re an artist in a position that has you deciding whether or not to take a deal of some sort that may reduce your ownership, remember to observe the value and be honest about your position. Not every artist can go solo and stay hot like Sauce Walka has over the last 10 years. It’s okay to have help or some kind of machine behind you as long as everything is done properly. A deal doesn’t automatically mean there is bad business being conducted, so don’t pass on a dream to become a star in exchange for being known as an “independent” artist.
